Nestled in the hills above San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood, the San Francisco Wine Trading Company has been a Bay Area landmark since 1976. Like any good story about wine, ours is one of family, hard work, and constant evolution. One could argue that the last four decades have been among the most dynamic in the history of the wine business. Whether it’s the widespread conversion of farming practices from conventional to organic, the consolidation of liquor houses, the blossoming of artisan importers, or the fluctuation of three economic booms and recessions, Gary Marcaletti has seen it all.
Gary got his start in the wine and spirits business in the early 70s, working for Tower Market. A few years later, he opened up a wine and liquor store called “Mr. Liquor” on Taraval and Funston Streets in our present day location. By the late 90s, as customers began gravitating more to wine than to liquor, we expanded our fine wine selection and decided to reinvent ourselves. The San Francisco Wine Trading Company was born!
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff cultivates long-term relationships with customers from all over the United States, helping them make informed buying decisions. Having access to both California’s incredible array of wineries and a sophisticated import market has given us the opportunity to curate one of the city’s best selections of fine wines and rare spirits. With both a local and national customer base ranging from everyday wine drinkers to serious collectors and Master Sommeliers, we have big expectations to meet! Unlike many wine stores who have a sole buyer, we source our wines and spirits by consensus. Our knowledgeable team represents a broad spectrum of palates, and we believe a democratic process assures the best products for our customers and allows us to accommodate all budgets and tastes.
Our quality offerings are almost entirely comprised of artisan, boutique, and family wineries, because we believe in the family farmer and we only want to sell you wines that we would drink ourselves. But fine wine does not have to be expensive, which is why we always offer the best pricing possible. Most importantly, we focus on cultivating a loyal clientele, so whether you need help planning a party or wedding, are looking to build a personal wine cellar, or would like to order something special that we don’t currently offer, we are happy to help.
Our store hosts weekly wine tastings on Saturdays from 2:00-5:30pm and on Sundays from 2:00-5:00pm and often coordinates special events with local eateries. If you are ever in San Francisco, please be sure to visit us—we’d love to meet you!

Meet Our Team
Gary Marcaletti - Head Hancho
Gary Marcaletti is the blood, sweat and tears behind the San Francisco Wine Trading Company. Having started the company as Mr. Liquor in 1976, he's spent his career adapting and shifting the business, relaunching the company as the SFWTC in the 90s. A stalwart in both the West Portal and wine communities, Gary has a regular clientele and a loyal following. It isn't often that he can be found outside the store, but when he is, he's up in Sonoma or sharing food and wine at the table with family and friends. He can be reached at email@example.com.
Julia Marcaletti - Wine Buyer
Bay Area native and long-time Francophile Julia Marcaletti has spent her career in wine, food, and the hospitality industry. Before signing on with SFWTC, Julia worked for Air France, Westin Hotels, and Francis Ford Coppola Winery. As our wine buyer, Julia is responsible for sourcing some of the finest wines from around the world, and planning our well-attended weekend wine tastings. While a rotating cameo of talented winemakers, importers, and distributors keep Julia's palate busy, she prefers to drink the wines of Loire Valley and Southern Rhône--that is, unless she can get her hands on a rare bottle of Masseto from Tuscany! For help ordering any of our wine selections, or information on our marketing or special events, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Michelle Pepitone - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Michelle Pepitone has spent the early part of her life in Marin County, within arm's reach of both wine country and San Francisco's vibrant restaurant scene. When her first career in the mental health field left her disheartened, a cool glass of Prosecco and a good conversation with her father over carciofi fritti at Rose Pistola moved her in the direction of the wine and spirits business. Soon after, she started working in both restaurants and wine retail, and she's been a member of the SFWTC team since 2002. While French and Italian wines are among her favorites, Michelle also appreciates global wines that are more esoteric in nature, more difficult to find (or pronounce) and totally off the beaten path. White, pink, red, sparkling or sweet, as long as a wine is truly balanced with a genuine sense of place and time, it is a-okay in her book. Wine and food pairing is one of her favorite customer challenges as is hunting down those rare, hard to find producers. For assistance ordering wines or spirits for the cellar, a special occasion or to simply enjoy in the moment, please contact Michelle at
April Schlanger - Wine & Spirits Consultant
April Schlanger has been sipping her way through the wine industry for 20 years. She has worked in distribution, importing, consulting and even owned her own retail wine store. You may recognize April as she worked for the SFWTC [formerly MR. LIQUOR] 15 years ago then moved to North Carolina with her husband Josh. Three children later, April and family are back in the city they love. She has a forty dollar Pinot Noir habit, loves wines that express their terroir and specializes in 'Natural, Organic and Biodynamic' wines. In her free time April loves feeding her husband and three kids, making jams and pickles, crafting with her kids and hosting wine dinners with her friends. She is well versed in European and Domestic wines and loves hunting down the special wine you never knew existed. email@example.com.
David Castleberry - Wine & Spirits Buyer; Cert. Sommelier by Court of Master Sommeliers
David grew up in Tucson, Arizona and made his way to San Francisco via Hawaii’s Big Island, where he acted as wine director and sommelier in several of the island’s finest restaurants. He has experience in multiple facets of the wine industry including working two harvests in Sonoma for the legendary Patz & Hall Winery. Former wine-director at Michael Mina’s RN74, David has transplanted his vast expertise as a wine consultant, wine director, and buyer to our neighborhood wine shop. He has an intimate, working knowledge of the world of wine, having extensively traveled the wine producing regions of Europe and the United States. If David is not in the kitchen crafting a Carbonara or out walking his dog, Cowboy, David is sipping a red or white Burgundy, enjoying a craft beer, or dare we say, drinking Champagne from a Chambong! You can contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jason Chow - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Jason was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. His first exposure to the culinary world was standing on a chair watching his mother cook on the stovetop as a child. As an adult, he went through the culinary arts program at CCSF, worked at Off-The-Grid, and finally ended up working as a Food Service Director and Cooking Instructor for a private school in San Francisco. A chance visit to a Napa winery with his future wife inspired him to take an interest in wine and food pairings. Now, he has taken that interest to invest in our retail store. If Jason’s not in the kitchen testing out a recipe, he will be relaxing with his family; usually with some wine. You can contact him at email@example.com.
Sarah Blau - Wine & Spirits Buyer; Cert. Sommelier by Court of Master Sommeliers
Sarah got a taste of the wine world while living and working as a pastry chef for a privately owned chateau in Southwest France. Her experience with Europe’s rich wine and food culture inspired her pursuit of beverage studies upon returning to the United States. She followed her new dream in wine by becoming a certified sommelier and performing a variety of roles in the wine and restaurant worlds. She worked in New York City at the luxury hotel, the Mandarin Oriental New York, followed by Aquavit, the Scandinavian restaurant where she made her mark as Beverage Manager. After growing up on the east coast Sarah moved to San Francisco to explore the west and further her wine career. After working at Aster and opening the cave à manger Verjus, Sarah is excited to continue her journey and share her passion for wine at the SFWTC. You can reach her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Emily Fruechtenicht - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Emily grew up with a food-loving family in Huntington Beach, CA. One uncle and one brother both owning restaurants exposed Emily to all aspects of the kitchen and she loves to share her cooking skills making big meals for friends. She moved to San Francisco to earn a degree in automotive design. She learned about her neighborhood wine shop and started coming to the wine tastings and was inspired to take a new career path and learn about the wine industry. If Emily isn't in the kitchen she's at the gym or home with her family and favorite cat. email@example.com.
Hannah Oliff - Wine Consultant
Hannah grew up in Chicago with no connection to wine. It wasn't until she moved to California after college that she discovered the wine world. While working in advertising she decided to take her hobby and love of wine into a part-time career by working at SFWTC on the weekends. By working there she has learned so much about the wines of the world and has developed her wine palate. Though California wines are her favorite she is learning to love the old world wines, especially Italian varietals.
Ryan Bruno - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Born and raised in San Francisco, Ryan Bruno began bussing tables at MoMo’s during high school when the restaurant first opened its doors across the street from the ballpark. By working in restaurants initially, and later bartending, serving and waiting tables in San Francisco and New York City, he became familiar with wines and spirits, most of all, from being behind the bar. He co-managed a wine and spirits boutique shop in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where he learned the day to day operations of a small business retail store, and contributed to wine and spirits buying for the store. In addition, he enjoyed experiencing the renewed interest in domestic spirits, such as bourbons and ryes and small batch distilleries production that followed. Upon returning to California, he pursued an interest in agriculture and the production side of the wine business, by farming for a season at one of the early certified organic farms in the northern Bay Area. He has experience with various aspects of the wine and spirits industries, including retail, management, distribution and sales, and is excited to be a recent addition to the team at SFTC. He is curious how a raft of volcanic rock the size of the island of Manhattan might soon effect the soil along the eastern coast of Australia. firstname.lastname@example.org
Christina Fischer - Office Manager

Christina enjoys spending time with her family and friends, occasionally partaking in a slivovitz toast. For billing and/or shipping questions, please contact email@example.com.
